First-ever polo event in an African township

The Soweto Equestrian Centre has been operating for 10 years – and the Soweto Polo Cup is an opportunity to commemorate this milestone

The Soweto Equestrian Centre in Rockville, which sits on 28 acres of land and houses 15 horses, reaches its 10-year milestone this year, and to commemorate this, it will hold the first-ever polo event in an African township.

Founded by Hloni Mathlare and Enos Mafokate, the Soweto Polo Cup aims to be a fun event as well as have a positive impact.

“The event will be hosted at the newly refurbished Soweto Equestrian Centre and is not only aiming at being a world-class event, and to rival prestigious equestrian events, but to introduce the lifestyle element of polo to the township market and to develop the sport in the township,” the founders said.

In its 10 years, the equestrian centre has strived to advance the lives of people in the surrounding community, and the event is set to take this objective further.

The centre aims to:

  • Open the elite world of equestrian sports to those who would never otherwise have had a chance
  • Equip people with the skills required in the equestrian industry
  • Improve the welfare of cart horses in Soweto and surrounding areas, and educate the owners on how to care for the animals
  • Get disabled children on horses so they can experience the benefits of riding
