Tommy Glynn 20-goal rained out again
By Alex Webbe
Continuing rains in Greenwich, CT forced the cancellations of Wednesday and
Thursday matches.
“Unfortunately, we will not have a game on either Wednesday or Thursday due to the
rain,” said Greenwich Polo Club manager Alex Roldan. “Since last Friday we had three
different storms resulting in nearly six inches of rain,” he added.
Roldan and the players are hoping for a change in the weather that might allow a game
or two on Sunday, depending on the field conditions.
The Greenwich Polo Club is still in the opening rounds of play in the 20-goal 2013
Tommy Glenn Memorial Cup. Four teams are competing including Airstream (Peter
Orthwein, Kris Kampsen, Guille Aguero and Mariano Gonzalez), Cinque Terre
Alessandro Bazzoni, Gringo Colombres, Joao Ganon and Brandon Phillips), Heathcote
Polo (Steve Lefkowitz, Naco Taverna, Tommy Biddle and Nick Manifold) and the home
White Birch polo team (Wesley Bryan, Matias Magrini, Mariano Aguerre and Peter
Brant).
The Tommy Glynn Memorial Cup got started on Sunday, June 2
blasting Heathcote 18-13. The following Thursday, June 6
Heathcote its second loss, 16-13.
Weather caused the cancellation of the Sunday game, and continuing rains washed out
Wednesday and Thursday matches as well.
“I’d really like to get our first game behind us,” said Brazilian 7-goaler Joao Ganon of the
Cinque Terre polo team.
“We’re trying to keep the horses fit by riding them indoors,” offered Ganon’s teammate
Brandon Phillips, “but it’s not the same.
Phillips had just finished the spring season of play at the Grand champions Polo Club
in Wellington and a short trip to Mexico City to play in an international match before
heading north. “I like our team,” said Phillips, “but we need to get on the field and get
these game played.”
